Alcohol is the fourth most reported fraudulent commodity in the U.S, and over 28% of global alcohol consumption is illicit alcohol. Illicit alcohol contains unregulated amounts of methanol, with over 2300 cases of methanol poisoning recorded annually in the U.S. Current products for methanol detection are expensive or impractical for users. We are aiming to develop a safe and inexpensive paper-based methanol testing kit that would display the methanol amount by color, such as pH paper would. We are a team of Biomedical Engineering and Biological Science undergraduates seeking mentors and advisors in Material or Chemical Engineering, as well as investors and research partners that would help finance and develop the sensor.
