Grapevine is developing rapid tests to identify catheter-associated bloodstream infections in hospitalized patients presenting with bacteremia. Our tests will be simple and easy to use, and will provide results to clinicians within 15 minutes. When hospitalized patients present with an infection, it can be difficult to identify whether the source is the patient’s catheter or infection elsewhere in the body. Currently, most clinicians have to rely on instinct to determine whether the bloodstream infection is caused by the catheter and it needs to be removed, or if the infection is coming from a different source. However, many patients who have been hospitalized multiple times have already had central venous catheters inserted multiple times, and are at risk of not having an insertion site available or of bleeding out if the catheter needs to be replaced. Using our product, physicians can confirm the source of the bacteremia and make an evidence-based decision on catheter removal.
