At the core of Free Dynamics’ platform technology are long lasting battery-free dynamical systems implemented using standard silicon manufacturing techniques, which can be exploited for a variety of tasks like sensing, timekeeping, data logging and secure authentication. Since these devices require no batteries and are compatible with CMOS processes, they can be miniaturized, manufactured cost-effectively and deployed at a previously unreachable scale. Our first application is geared towards environmental monitoring in temperature-controlled supply chains.
In the pharma/food industry, disruption to ideal temperature conditions may cause loss of potency or safety, leading to adverse effects on public health and finances. Temperature excursions in supply chains lead to over $34 billion in losses in the healthcare industry every year. This problem of spoilage is not unique to the pharma industry (25% of the cold supply chain) but also widespread in the food distribution systems. Compared to existing temperature monitoring methods which are bulky and expensive, our solution enables an economically viable approach for a quantifiable temperature monitoring solution at per-unit level. Additionally, it can be used across a range of temperature profiles, detect freeze damage and vibrations, have zero-downtime and perform continuous logging which can facilitate pinpointing faults in the supply chain for future mitigation.
